How Many Sow, Tend, Harvest, and Shape Days Are There in a Year?
We ran the real moon calculations behind our Sow, Tend, Harvest, and Shape categories to see how the days actually divide across a year.
The Lunar Hair Almanac sorts every day of the year into one of five readings: Sow, Tend, Harvest, Shape, and Fallow, based on the moon’s position in the zodiac. If you’ve used our lunar hair calendar, you already know how the day-to-day reading works. What we hadn’t answered before now is a simpler question: over a full year, how do those five categories actually divide up?
We ran the calculation using the same method behind the printable calendar, real moon positions calculated in Eastern Time, not a generic moon phase estimate. Here’s what a real year looks like.
The numbers, three years running
| Year | Sow | Tend | Harvest | Shape | Fallow |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 86 | 88 | 89 | 90 | 12 |
| 2027 | 89 | 88 | 88 | 87 | 13 |
| 2028 | 88 | 89 | 89 | 88 | 12 |
The four active categories stay within about four days of each other every year we checked. Fallow moves with the New Moon, so its count follows how many New Moons land in that particular calendar, twelve most years, thirteen when the timing works out that way.
Why the categories land so close together
Each zodiac sign takes the moon roughly two to three days to cross, and the moon makes its way around all twelve signs about thirteen times a year. With four elements splitting twelve signs evenly, no single category ends up with much more room in the calendar than the others. It’s a function of how the zodiac wheel is built, not something we adjusted to make the numbers come out even.
What this does and doesn’t tell you
This count only tracks which category each day falls into. It doesn’t measure hair growth, hair health, or any outcome, and moon phase hair care in general is a tradition, not a scientific claim. What the numbers do show is how consistently the system itself behaves: a set reading applied to real astronomical positions, year after year, rather than something reshuffled to fit a narrative.
FAQ
Does one category get more days than the others?
Not by much. Across the three years we checked, Sow, Tend, Harvest, and Shape stay within about four days of each other out of a full year.
How many Fallow days are there in a year?
Fallow days follow the New Moon, so the count matches however many New Moons fall in that calendar year, usually twelve, sometimes thirteen.
Where can I find which days are Sow, Tend, Harvest, or Shape this year?
That day-by-day breakdown is what the printable calendar itself shows. The current edition covers September through December 2026 and is available as a Preview on Etsy.
