What Is the Lunar Hair Calendar?

Moon-phase hair timing is an old idea with a very active following right now: TikTok’s #newmoonhaircut tag alone has been viewed more than a billion times, and the practice shows up everywhere from old farmer’s almanacs to modern astrology apps. The moon moves through phases and zodiac signs on a predictable cycle, and different points in that cycle are traditionally linked to different outcomes for a haircut: fresh starts, care, bold change, style, or rest.

Moon-phase hair timing is a tradition, closer to a farmer’s almanac than a lab result. We don’t promise it changes your hair. What we promise is that every date on this page is calculated correctly, checked by hand, so if the ritual appeals to you, the numbers underneath it are real.

The Five-Day System

Every day of the month falls into one of five categories, drawn from the moon’s position. The Almanac’s printable calendar tells you which category applies to any given day. Here’s what each one means:

Sow: a day for beginnings. Try a fresh cut, a new routine, or a first trim.
Tend: a day for care. Deep condition, maintain length, keep things steady.
Harvest: a day for the leap. Go big, a dramatic cut or bold color.
Shape: a day for style. Layers, texture, trims that shape rather than length.
Fallow: a day for rest. Skip the scissors, let things be.

Four of these categories are tied to the moon’s zodiac sign. The fifth, Fallow, is tied to the moon’s phase instead, and it’s worth explaining on its own.

Understanding Fallow: Why the New Moon Is a Rest Day

If you’ve spent any time in moon-phase hair content, you’ve likely seen the opposite advice: that the new moon is the moment for a “big chop” or a fresh start. That’s a common tradition too, and it’s not wrong, just different from ours.

In the Almanac’s system, every Fallow day lands on a New Moon by definition. It’s built into the calendar automatically, not a rule you have to remember separately. If you’re used to a system that treats the new moon as a cutting day, this is the one place The Lunar Hair Almanac does things differently, and now you know why.

What This Page Doesn’t Show You

The dates above tell you when the moon changes phase. They don’t tell you which days are Sow, Tend, Harvest, Shape, or Fallow, that day-by-day categorization depends on the moon’s zodiac sign as well as its phase, and working it out by hand takes real astronomical calculation.
