Moon Sign vs. Moon Phase for Hair: What’s the Difference?
Phase and sign aren't the same thing. Here's the difference, and why The Lunar Hair Almanac's five-day system is built on sign, not phase alone.
Most moon-phase hair advice online talks about phase only: cut during a waxing moon, wait during a waning one. That’s real folklore, and different traditions treat the waning half differently, some for release or maintenance rather than avoidance. Either way, phase alone leaves out something else that matters: which zodiac sign the moon is moving through. Mixing those two up is where most of the confusion in this space comes from.

What a moon phase is
A moon phase describes how much of the moon is lit, as seen from Earth: new, waxing, full, waning. It cycles roughly every 29.5 days, and it’s what most people mean when they talk about moon timing in general, gardening by the moon, tracking a full moon, checking tonight’s phase.
What a moon sign is
A moon sign is different. It’s which zodiac sign the moon is passing through on a given day. The moon moves through all twelve signs roughly every 27 days, spending about two to three days in each one. Phase and sign run on separate clocks that only rarely line up the same way twice.
Why this matters for a haircut
Generic “cut during a waxing moon” advice only looks at phase. It treats every day in that window the same way. In the approach this Almanac uses, sign is doing most of the actual work: what kind of day it is, not just whether the moon is growing or shrinking.
That’s why a phase-only chart can’t tell you a specific day is better for a bold color change than a simple trim, but a sign-based system can.
How our system uses both
The Lunar Hair Almanac’s five categories, Sow, Tend, Harvest, Shape, and Fallow, are built primarily around the moon’s sign each day. In our system, four categories map to the moon’s element as it moves through each zodiac sign. The fifth, Fallow, is the exception: we tie it to phase instead, landing on the New Moon regardless of sign, since that’s the point of least light and, in our reading, the natural pause in the cycle.
In the way we’ve built it, sign tells you what kind of day it is most of the month. Phase tells you when to rest.

Working out which sign the moon occupies on a specific date takes real astronomical calculation, not a guess, and it changes every two to three days regardless of the calendar month.
